Our
butterfly bushes are in bloom and they are beautiful! Butterfly bushes are easy to grow and take care of. They are vigorous growers and evergreen if the winter is not too severe. They come in a variety of colors, attract hummingbirds, butterflies and beneficial insects to your garden. They are hardy plants and seem to take neglect pretty well and can handle being transplanted if you need to uproot them and move them. I rescued mine from someone who was pulling them out of her front yard. I actually came home from her yard with 2 and they handled the transplant well. I ended up digging one of them up and it's doing well now at my sisters house. I have a
Black Knight and also have a
Pink Delight. The Pink Delight I purchased bare root from Home Depot at around the same time I transplanted the Black Knight. They both are standing at nearly 10 feet tall or taller now.

Such beautiful flowers!!! I think next year I'll have to concentrate on adding more to my garden. These are just lovely.
Beautiful. I planted one a couple of years ago. I wonder if the winter did it in or if I killed it by planting it too late. Thinking about how large it would be today Sure wish I hadn't screwed it up.
Caffeinated Mom:
Thank you for the compliment. I also cut them for a vase this year for the first time and they are doing fantastic for a week now in the water. I am trying to add more flowers to the yard - I love the cottage garden look.
Mr. Brown Thumb:
I was quite surprised how well they transplanted - even twice with the one moving to my sister's house. I bought the bare root one from HDepot for about 6 dollars and in no time it shot up to the height of the Black Knight. I would def go that route again when buying. I heard they can reseed as well..If you are local and know how to propagate - you are certainly welcome to some of my plant.http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/propa/msg062220104186.html
Your butterfly bush is ahead of mine. My blossoms should pop this weekend.
Your cottage home sounds lovely.
That's definitely one plant that takes good care of itself! We have 5 of the same kind and one newly planted cutting of another kind. Beautiful plants when in bloom!

Where can I find (or who can tell me soil needs. I have two, rooted from my sister; don't know colors yet even tho I've had them rooted for several years in unsuitable places. Now, in earnest, I have planted them in a good location but am disppointed that I see no buds- It's May 30th in upper, mid North Carolina Unfortunately, I fertilized them before I read they don't need it. Have LOTS of growth on one which was planted first; second one is doing ok, it was in a huge pot with a Knock Out rose and a month ago gave it its permanent home.
